Bicycle Safety in Numbers: Scientific American Podcast
SA concludes that more bike riders make drivers more cautious. I have another hypothesis. The late-adopter riders are people who are less likely to take risks. The early adopters are probably bigger risk takers and more prone to getting in accidents. Just a "theory".
