More n-word

Wow, today is all about nigger. There's also this Denver Post article about a jury that refused to convict someone for ethnic intimidation even though he yelled "nigger" at an African-American student he was beating up. The jury felt that the term was an insult, but not a racial insult.

Hotaling, the juror, said that part of the difficulty jurors had in discerning whether racial hatred was involved was that witness accounts varied on who said what and when they said it.

There was some evidence, Hotaling said, that someone else in the van had shouted the word. And one of Martinez's companions in the van told jurors the word Martinez uttered was actually "nigga" and it was said in a "hip-hop" way, according to an account in the Daily Camera.

So the defense goes for the two-word theory of nigger/nigga. Maybe Damon Wayans should bring this up to the trademark people.

This law was intended to keep beating-people-up free of rude racial epithets? I'm not sure I'm understanding the benefit to society here.
